According to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, 400,000 American children a year seek medical attention for dog bites. Teach your children how to be safe around their pet dog and strange dogs. dog training minnesota

Parents:

certified dog trainer in st. cloud It is important for you to socialize your puppy around children. If you have a new puppy at home, let your child feed the puppy. Start off with having your children hand feed the puppy, then giving the puppy his food in a bowl, and then let your child add more food to the bowl as your puppy is eating. These are important steps to take with a new puppy so he accepts children around his food bowl.

minnesota dog and puppy trainer Let kids play with your puppy and pet him all over. Many kids like to pull puppies ears and tails. Let your puppy get used to this so when a child pulls his tail as an adult dog, he will be used to it.

minnesota dog and puppy training In canine language, direct eye contact is considered threatening. Many dog attacks to children are because children looked into a dog's eyes. With small children and large dogs, their eyes are at the same level. Get your puppy used to eye contact with humans so he learns that eye contact with humans is safe.

Tips for the children:
- Regarding unknown and adult dogs
1. Never approach a dog you do not know. Some dogs are afraid of new people. Always ask the owners permission first.
2. If the owner says you can meet their dog, let the dog sniff you first before petting. Sniffing is a dog's way of shaking your hand. Then you can pet the dog on the side of their head. Many dogs do not like being pet on the top of their head.
3. Always approach a dog from the front or side. Coming from behind may startle or scare the dog.
4. Always stay away from a dog when he or she is eating. Some dogs are protective of their food.
5. Do not hit, grab, or poke a dog.
6. Do not run near a dog. Dogs will want to chase you and sometimes they can get rough.
7. Do not touch a dog through a kennel or fence.
8. Talk softly and nicely to a dog.
9. Do not stare in a dog's eyes. To a dog that means, "I dare you to bite me!"
10. Always be with a grown-up when meeting or playing with dogs.
**No dog should ever be completely trusted and left alone with a child. Teach your children how to act around dogs, and teach your puppy how children act**
