| Temperment |
| Beagles were bred as pack hunters, so they love companionship with humans and other dogs. They are great family pets, very playful yet gentle. Being scenthounds, when they catch a scent they're on the move. They must be kept in a fenced in area or on a leash, as they will follow their noses wherever a scent takes them. They can be very independent and stubborn, which makes them hard to train. Some Beagles may nip or bite if they do not get their way. Be a firm, fair leader, and give them a job to do so they learn to work for rewards. Have you ever heard a Beagle's bay? If you haven't, I suggest you spend time with other Beagles before purchasing one. The bay, which is a mixture between a howl and a bark, can be very intolerable to some people. |
